У Ольги під плащем меч

Княгиня Ольга – стратегиня, смілива, креативна, віддана країні та родині лідерка! Вона помстилася древлянам за вбивство чоловіка князя Ігоря, спаливши їхнє поселення.

У 1911-му році скульптор Іван Кавалерідзе створював на замовлення Київського відділу військово-історичного товариства пам'ятник Ольги, що стоятиме на Михайлівській площі Києва. У першій версії княгиня поставала рішучою правителькою з мечем в руках.

Однак цей образ збентежив митрополита Київського і Галицького Флавіана і автору наказали втихомирити жінку: меч прибрати і в руки хрест вкласти.

Скульптор меч прибрав і хрест вклав. Але він знайшов спосіб не відбирати меч, сховавши його від усіх під плащ, про що свідчить рука Ольги, яка міцно його стискає, — на автор натякає у своїх спогадах. За цю зухвалість його не запросили на відкриття пам'ятки, ще й зробили зауваження щодо великих грудей княгині.

Наша мініскульптура повертає княгині її законну зброю і нагадує, що кожна з нас Ольга, у кожної з нас свій меч. Ним може бути усмішка, мовчання, слово, дія.

"У Ольги під плащем меч — це повідомлення для кожного українця і українки, для кожного нашого друга і особливо ворога. Я хочу щоб жінки приходили до Ольги за силою, щоб вони відчували, що не одинокі. Хочу, щоб чоловіки приводили до неї своїх доньок, сестер і мам — щоб вони бачили та усвідомлювали свою силу, своє право на свободу, на дію, на боротьбу" – каже Юлія Бевзенко, авторка проєкту Шукай.

Under Olha's cloak is a sword

Princess Olha was a strategist. She was a fearless, creative leader devoted to her country and family.

She took revenge on the Drevlians for the murder of her husband, Prince Ihor, burning their settlement.

In 1911, the sculptor Ivan Kavaleridze created a monument to Olha on the order of the Kyiv branch of the Military Historical Society. The monument was to be located on Mykhailivska Square in Kyiv. In the first version, the princess appeared as a decisive ruler with a sword in her hand.

However, this image agitated Flavian, the Metropolitan of Kyiv and Galicia, and the author was ordered to soothe the woman - to remove a sword and put a cross into her hand.

The sculptor removed the sword and placed the cross. Yet he found a way not to take the sword away, having hidden it under Olha's cloak. It is evidenced by Olha's hand tightly squeezing it – the author alludes to this in his memoirs.

For this audacity, he was not invited to the opening of the monument; moreover, they made a remark to him about the princess's large breasts.

Our mini-sculpture returns the princess her lawful weapon and reminds us that each of us is Olha, who has her own sword. It could be a smile, a word, an action, or silence.

I want Olha to be a place where women go to find strength and feel that they are not alone. I want men to bring their daughters, sisters, and mothers so that they see and realize their strength, their right to freedom, to action, and to fight – says Yulia Bevzenko, the author of the project 'Shukai'.
