Київський Самсон

Ця скульптура присвячена одному з найстаріших фонтанів Києва. Фонтан має вигляд біблійного Самсона, який розриває пащу лева і колись був частиною першого київського водогону. Мініcкульптуру встановлено у внутрішньому дворику бізнес-центра Astarta Organic Business Centre.

Фонтан «Самсон» було споруджено ще у 1748 році на місці ще древнішого "фонтанного колодязя" – басейну, над яким була споруджена дерев'яна фігура у вигляді янгола з чашею. До басейну сходились дерев'яні ж труби, по яких вода стікала з численних пагорбів, що оточували Поділ. На цих пагорбах, вкритих лісом, били ключі, тож подоляни мали достатньо питної води. Більш заможні проводили водогін прямо до своїх садиб, а бідніші мали змогу набрати воду просто з колодязя на центральній площі, якою тоді була Контрактова, - колодязь стояв неподалік від будівлі Магістрату.

В XVII ст. місце янгола з чашею займає так само дерев'яний Самсон, а над фонтаном відомий київський архітектор Іван Григорович-Барський зводить барочну ротонду, купол якої прикрашає постаттю апостола Андрія Первозванного.

Згодом на колонах ротонди з'явився сонячний годинник — витвір ще одного видатного мешканця Подолу, вчителя математики з Києво-Могилянської академії П'єра Брульон (якому присвячена інша мініскульптура).

Кияни та численні прочани полюбили фонтан з Самсоном. Почали з'являтися численні легенди та прикмети, пов'язані з цим символом Подола. Казали, що той, хто вип'є "святої Самсонової води", той залишиться жити в Києві назавжди. (Не пробуйте зробити це зараз! Замість чистої ключової води в фонтані циркулюють спеціальні речовини, які запобігають замулюванню труб. Цю воду не можна пити!)

В такому вигляді будівля зберігалась до 1930-х років, коли була зруйнована за наказом нового радянського керівництва Києва. На щастя киян, дерев'яний Самсон з левом збереглись, і зараз входять до колекції Національного художнього музея України.

В кінці 1970-х років, в рамках підготовки міста до святкування 1500-річчя, Контрактову площу було реконструйовано, а фонтан і ротонду — відновлено.

About the Fountain of Samson in Kyiv.

The fountain was constructed in 1748 – it is one of the first fountains in
Kyiv. A stone pavilion-like rotunda was designed by an architect Ivan
Hryhorovych-Barskyi. That time the fountain resided opposite the building
of City Council. It is the architect who named the construction Felitsiyal
(you can still hear the name among Kyivans).

It is interesting that the water which was flowing into the basin built during
Kyivan Rus made a kind of discovery – it turned out to be the very first
public water supply in Kyiv.

The fountain took its name after the sculpture inside of the rotunda –
Samson tearing the lion's jaws from which the water flows. The first
statuary was wooden, later it was replaced with more solid material.
Namely since that time, 1800s, Kyivans began to name the fountain after
strong Samson.
The legend has it that the fountain is located at the place of the holy spring
and the destiny of the whole city depends on it. It is said that the city will
exist for as long as the spring doesn't dry out. It is believed that this
fountain was constructed namely for this reason. Moreover, they say if you
drink water from the fountain, you will always live in Kyiv.

The legend about Samson.
Samson is renowned for the prodigious strength which he used to fight his
enemies and to perform feats. Being armless he could easily fight the lion,
defeat the entire army of enemies just with the help of donkey's jaw or even
destroy huge buildings all alone.

The Old Testament says that before Samson was born the angel of the
Lord appeared to his father Manoah and his mother, who was childless and
unable to give birth, and promised that they would have a son who would
save the people of Israel from Philistines. To give birth to Samson his
mother had to refuse alcohol and 'unclean' meat following the Jewish
kanoons as 'the boy is to be a Nazirite and his head is never to be touched
by a razor'.

During his life Samson gained numerous victories over Philistines until he
shared with Delilah, Philistine woman, the secret of his strength.
Delilah ordered to cut Samson's hair. Being weakened he was captured,
blinded, and enslaved by the Philistines.
While Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god
Samson prayed to the Lord asking him to give him back his strength. On
receiving his strength back Samson demolished the great Philistine temple
destroying hundreds of his captors and himself.
